Location: The race starts in the central crossroads of the village of Greenwood in the far western part of Albemarle County, about 25 minutes due west of Charlottesville. Parking, registration awards and refreshments are held at the Greenwood Community Center (come to the center of Greenwood and turn right).
Time of Year: The race is held either on Bruce Barnes' Birthday (June 9th) or as close to that date as possible. Sometimes the race is held in the evening (5:00) and other times it will be run in the morning.
Course Description: This unique one mile road race (the only one in our area) is all downhill, with its steepest descent over the last quarter mile. Splits are read every quarter mile and the race finishes within view of Lady Astor?s famous mansion, ?Mirador?. The runners are treated to gorgeous panoramic mountain views on their cool down back to the community center after the race.
Tidbits: The race was run on a downhill portion of Pen Park from 1992-2003 but we had to move the course because of traffic issues within the park. The race is run in memory of and as a celebration of Bruce Barnes? life. He was a very popular member of the CTC for over ten years and one of the fastest racers in the area (he ran 51 minutes at the Ten Miler one year) until his untimely and tragic death in 1991 at age 35.
Volunteer Race Director: Lindy Bain and Mark Lorenzoni, both close friends of Barnes, have directed the event since 1992.
Average Attendance: 45-55
Beneficiary: All of the proceeds are always passed along to the CTC (over $2,000 since 1992).
At The Races

With beautiful weather at their backs the runners participating in the Bruce Barnes Memorial Mile ran some of the fastest times in the illustrious 18 year history of this popular downhill event. UVA?s Emil Heinking came within an eyelash of becoming the first person to break the 4 minute barrier on Central Virginia soil as he clocked a blazing 4:00:57. He was followed by CTC member Alec Lorenzoni, who ran 4:10. CTC member Becky Keller came within half a second of Nicola Ratcliffe?s course record as she scorched a 5:19 blue ribbon performance. Other CTC times of note over this fast downhill Greenwood course were turned in by Cass Girvin (4:18), Mike Stadnisky (4:26), Galin Boyd (4:33), Hernan Garbini (4:42), Doug Bloor (4:46), Kelsey Grupp (6:00), Sarah Grupp (6:16), Craig Sarazin (6:20), Mac Outlaw (6:21), Asher Ardron (7 years old, 6:24), Erica Grupp (6:41), Caroline Outlaw (6:41), Adam Slate (7:03), Teryn Ratcliffe (7:56), Alyce Outlaw (7:06), and William Grupp (8:31).
Run in memory of longtime favorite CTC son Bruce Barnes, this fun CTC event attracted 40 participants this year. I was ably assisted by my longtime co-director Lindy Bain and we were supported by a bevy of CTC volunteers including Bill Guerrant, John Ratcliffe, Chris Post, Gavin Ratcliffe, Cynthia Lorenzoni, Hernan Garbini, Kris Bain and Andrea Wright.

Cooler weather greeted the runners for the area?s only downhill road mile and for the first time in the illustrious 15 year history of this popular fun run, the race was held in the morning. What makes this race so unique is the low key, truly fun run feeling. No pre-race day signups, no t-shirts, an open donation fee policy, lots of food and drinks and prizes to 75% of the finishers . . . not to mention the distance: A one mile race with splits read out to you every quarter mile. Neat stuff!
CTC member Alec Lorenzoni successfully defended his 2005 title by rocketing over the scenic Greenwood course en route to a 4:13 clock stopper. The former Western standout, who currently races with the Cavaliers, out legged VMI speedster Edwin Lugo (4:21). Hosni Haghighian out legged the women?s field with an impressive 5:48 and Peggy Mowbray finished second in 6:00, easily winning the 50+ age group. Other CTC age group blue ribbon winners: Pete Runge, Rick Kwiatkowski , Jeff Stafford, Andrew Zapanta, Skip Mullaney, Richard Moon, Jim Bell, Joan Bienvenue , George Gillies, Susan Dendiger, David Kwiatkowski, Noelle Davis, Armand Zambardi, Sharon Balint, Mary Kwiatkowski, and Lisa Kwiatkowski .
In keeping with tradition, longtime Western Albemarle coach Lindy Bain helped me co-direct this race that is held annually on or around the birth date of Bruce Barnes, a longtime popular CTC member who tragically died at age 35. We were assisted by a pile of CTC volunteers including Dan and Erin Wiggins, Chuck Witt, Chris Post, Bill Guerrant, Carol Finch, Cynthia, Annie , Audrey and Adrian Lorenzoni, Mike Elchinger and Kristin Bain.
